Block Captain Program
The Eastern Hills Neighborhood Association is proud to announce a new block captain program. The idea behind having a block captain is to improve community cohesion and foster good relationships with your neighbors. Experience shows that being a close-knit community will reduce crime and improve the overall quality of living.
A block captain is the eyes and ears for a block of houses or a street. For you as a neighbor they are your first point of contact. They look for anything out of the ordinary that might need attention and communicate news and organize events for the neighbors on their block. They are not vigilantes; they only notify the police when necessary but do not try to act as police themselves. We have created a group messaging service that will connect residents on the same block and send reminders about upcoming events in the neighborhood. Interested in Volunteering? Who is a Block Captain?
Block Captains are the primary point of contact between the crime prevention programs of the police department and the residents in a neighborhood.
Why do people choose to be Block Captains?
A commitment to be concerned about your neighbor’s property and well-being as well as your own. A commitment that when you see suspicious activity, you will take action by calling 9-1-1 and notifying your neighbors.
What do they do?
The Block Captain takes on the main responsibility for maintaining and updating the contact list for the neighborhood watch area. They are the primary point of contact to whom the police department will send information and alerts. The Captain will be asked to distribute that information to the rest of the block or neighborhood area. The responsibilities can be shared with a co-captain if desired. The Block Captain meets new neighbors and explains the Neighborhood Watch Program and acquires their contact information and distributes materials.
What doesn’t a Block Captain have to do?You don’t have to perform any special task, go to a lot of meetings, or take on extra responsibilities. You don’t have to patrol the neighborhood, or tell your neighbors every aspect of your business.
What are some of the benefits of being a Block Captain?
Being a Block Captain can be a rewarding experience. You meet neighbors you might not have known otherwise. Organizing Neighborhood Watch makes the attitude of watchfulness more systematic. The more you interact with each other, the more you are observant and engaged, the better you are able to identify those things that are unusual, out of place of suspicious. Lastly, Neighborhood Watch has been proven to work in reducing crime.
